The Excel PHI Function

Function Description

The Excel PHI function returns the value of the density function for a standard normal distribution for a supplied number.

Note: The Phi function is new in Excel 2013 and so is not available in earlier versions of Excel.

The syntax of the function is:

PHI( x )

where the x argument is the number for which you want to calculate the density function for a standard normal distribution.

Phi Function Examples

Phi Function Chart
Density function for standard normal distribution for -5 ≤ x ≤ +5

The above chart on the right shows the density function for a standard normal distribution for values of x between -5 and +5.

The spreadsheets below show the Excel Phi function, used to evaluate this function for four different values of x.

 Formulas:
  A
1 =PHI( -1.5 )
2 =PHI( 0 )
3 =PHI( 0.1 )
4 =PHI( 1 )
 Results:
  A
1 0.129517596
2 0.39894228
3 0.396952547
4 0.241970725
